Levels and labels: divisions, departments, teams and groups
Your organization's levels, which ones are optional, how to rename them, and where groups fit.
An organization is built from levels: Organization, Division, Department and Team, plus Groups that sit outside the tree. Every level except Organization and Team is optional, so a small company can use teams alone.
- A unit sits only under a higher level. Skipping a level is fine: a team can sit straight under a division or under the organization.
- Teams can nest one level of sub-teams.
- A group sits under nothing. Use it for things like committees or project crews that cut across the tree.
- Location is something a unit has, not a level of its own.
Renaming the levels
People who manage members can rename each level, singular and plural, under Administration, Roles & Teams, Levels (for example Practice and Practices instead of Division and Divisions). Renaming never breaks anything: the product works from the level itself, not from its name. Departments are created and renamed there too.
A department can be removed only when nobody is in it directly. Its teams stay, under the division.
