Notifications on your computer and your phone

One card per message, a badge that counts what matters, and reading on one device clears the others.

One message, one card

A direct message shows one desktop card, even with two Navalo windows or tabs open. Every window shares one list of what it has already shown.

The app icon on your phone

  • The red number counts what is waiting for you personally: unread direct and group messages, @-mentions, and messages in any chat you marked important.
  • To mark a chat important, right-click it in the chat list on the web or desktop and choose Mark as important. Its new messages then count in the number, even in a channel or a muted chat.
  • Everything else that waits (channel messages, task and meeting notices) does not add to the number.
  • iPhone: the icon can only show a number, so when only regular items wait it shows nothing. They are still in Notification Center and in the app's Inbox.
  • Android: the launcher's notification dot appears whenever a notification is in the shade; launchers that show a number show the same red number.
  • The number comes from Navalo, the same count the web uses. It updates with each notification and whenever you open the app.

Read once, cleared everywhere

  • Read a conversation on the web or desktop and the phone's notifications for it are removed and the number drops.
  • Read it on the phone and the desktop's card for it closes on its next check (within about 20 seconds) in a browser. The desktop app cannot take back a card the system has already shown; it stays in the system's notification list, but no new card is raised for that conversation.
  • While you have a conversation open on the computer (the window in front), your phone does not buzz for it. While it is open on your phone, the computer raises no card for it.
  • Quiet hours, Do not disturb and muted chats work as before.
